The weekly newspaper Caribbean Business on March 2nd, 2015, Noticel on April 15th, 2015 and the newspaper “El Nuevo Día” on April 18th, 2015, have reported that the economic crisis in the island and more attractive salaries have Puerto Rico close to a medical crisis, according to representatives of said sector.
They inform that the doctors are leaving Puerto Rico in huge quantities, as the Commonwealth’s crisis forces them to search jobs in other places, according to the College of Medical Surgeons of Puerto Rico.
On April 12th, 2015, the Association of Medicine of Puerto Rico issued a release informing the in 2014, 361 doctors left the island, mostly to the United States.
Almost unanimously, the reasons provided for said exodus are the quality of life and the economic conditions.
Neither the College of Medical Surgeons nor the Association of Medicine of Puerto Rico reported that the doctors are leaving Puerto Rico due to medical malpractice lawsuits.
